Values & Aims

Daughters seeks to move away from imposing forced changes or western models upon girls and looks for ways to empower girls to change their own lives within their own cultural and social contexts. This is done by equipping them with external and internal resources to make changes to their own lives which are sustainable. Daughters aims to move away from NGO dependence, teaching girls to take responsibility for their own lives. For example, salaries are provided rather than housing and meals, so that girls live independently in the community and learn to budget their money.

Employment at Daughters is structured so that girls can progress up through 6 levels of responsibility, from team leader and trainer to designer positions. Girls gain a strong sense of ownership and inclusion, and become role models for their peers.

Daughters aim is for its businesses to become self-sustaining, reducing donor dependence and promoting sustainability.

Monthly feedback interviews are conducted with girls in the programs, which assess effectiveness of the programs from client perspectives, along with social and psychological functioning and quality of life.
